Weight Gain

Weight gain and obesity are reaching epidemic proportions in the United States. Interestingly, this epidemic appears to have started in the early 70s at the time when the high-carb food pyramid was introduced by the US government. Ultimately, weight gain is simply due to a caloric intake that exceeds the number of calories burned. Unfortunately, the equation is often not actually that simple because of the many factors that affect appetite and metabolism.

The typical conventional approach is to recommend intense aerobic exercise combined with a low-fat diet . When this fails, people are often prescribed a stimulant medication to hasten weight loss. Unfortunately, these medications have many side effects and their benefits only last for as long as the medicine is taken.

Surgery is used in some severe cases.

Dr. Doyle's approach to weight loss starts with first searching for factors that may be impairing metabolism such is hormonal imbalances. For example, excess cortisol or deficient thyroid hormones tend to cause weight gain. Similarly, low testosterone is associated with weight gain. Dr. Doyle generally recommends moderate physical activity that does not overstress the body. From a nutritional standpoint, most people lose weight most efficiently using a reduced carbohydrate diet. The degree of carbohydrate reduction required is different for each individual. In addition, Dr. Doyle sometimes uses supplements to help curb food cravings or improve metabolism.
