Male Hormone Deficiencies

The major male sex hormone is called testosterone. Testosterone is produced primarily in the male testes, but small amounts are made through the conversion of the adrenal hormone DHEA into testosterone. Testosterone and its metabolites are responsible for the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics. These hormones also play an important role in maintaining overall health. Testosterone deficiency has been linked to a wide variety of problems including sexual dysfunction, depression, diabetes and weight gain. On the other hand, it's worth remembering that excess testosterone can cause problems too. In addition to other side effects, excessive treatment with testosterone can lead to estrogen excess, which can cause serious side effects of its own.

The typical conventional approach to testosterone deficiency is to identify the problem through history, physical exam and blood testing, then given a standardized dose of testosterone. The patient is reevaluated to determine if treatment is adequate and for signs of side effects including prostate cancer. Adequate treatment is generally determined by restoring normal blood levels of testosterone.

Dr. Doyle's approach includes the standard evaluation for testosterone deficiency. Treatment often starts with a combination of transdermal testosterone and nutritional and lifestyle changes nutritional and lifestyle changes to improve testosterone production and metabolism. In other cases, related conditions such as low thyroid and low DHEA are treated in order to help raise testosterone levels. Nutritional and/or herbal supplements are typically used to minimize the potential for side effects. In some cases the hormone progesterone is supplemented to further improve testosterone metabolism. In any case, patients are followed closely for any evidence of prostate or other problems associated with testosterone therapy. As a rule, treatment is geared toward relieving symptoms of low testosterone while minimizing side effects. Overall, testosterone is used in the context of maintaining an healthy hormone balance throughout the body and improving health.
