High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure or hypertension, refers to an elevated pressure within the arteries. Literally, pressure in the tubes (the arteries) is too high. This excessive pressure appears to cause damage to the arteries and is definitely associated with increased risk of many significant illnesses including heart disease and stroke. The cause of most cases of hypertension is poorly understood. Conditions associated with hypertension include:

· Smoking
· Obesity or being overweight
· Diabetes
· Sedentary lifestyle / Lack of physical activity
· High levels of salt intake in cases of sodium sensitivity. Paradoxically, some people's blood pressure goes up when they restrict salt.
· Insufficient calcium, potassium, and magnesium consumption
· Vitamin D deficiency
· High levels of alcohol consumption
· Stress
· Aging
· Medicines such as birth control pills
· Genetics and a family history of hypertension
· Chronic kidney disease
· Adrenal and thyroid problems

The usual approach to treating high blood pressure is to give prescription medications to lower blood pressure. These medicines are often effective in reducing blood pressure numbers. Unfortunately, they have many side effects ranging from mineral depletion and electrolyte imbalances to depression fatigue and weight gain.

Dr. Doyle's approach is to look for the underlying cause of the problem with particular attention to the issues listed above. The goal is to reverse these conditions by making changes in lifestyle and nutrition and in many cases treating the hormonal problems that are at the root of high blood pressure. It is remarkable how often common causes of high blood pressure are ignored in favor of a quick prescription for blood pressure medicine.
